Who we are
We are an exciting new Welsh cancer charity that was launched in October 2005 at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff by BBC television personality Huw Edwards.
Cancer Care Cymru employ a team of highly skilled nurses practising at specialist level. We believe that developing nurse led services where appropriate is a vital part of the charity’s philosophy in delivering a first class service to patients and their families. The charity also believes this has less to do with filling voids created by a reduction in doctors’ working hours than having a real and positive impact on patient outcomes and care, and encourages and embraces the development of nurse led services/clinics wherever the need is identified.
Cancer Care Cymru nurses currently work at Velindre Hospital, The Royal Glamorgan, University Hospital of Wales, Llandough Hospital, Princess of Wales Hospital Bridgend, and the charity has just appointed their first nurse to work at Singleton Hospital, Swansea.
From an initial team of eight Oncology Nurse Specialists when the charity was formed, Cancer Care Cymru now has a team of fourteen nurses.
We have also just appointed our first Welfare Rights Officer to assist patients in claiming any benefits they may become entitled to on their diagnosis.
As our organisation and team expands our plan is to extend our services along the M4 corridor into West and North Wales to ensure that patients and their families throughout the principality can experience Cancer Care Cymru's unique brand of specialist care.
Most of Cancer Care Cymru's nurses are site specific in that they provide specialist care, information and support to a group of patients with a specific type of cancer. They work in partnership with other NHS staff and other organisations primarily in out-patient clinics (though some roles include ward visits).
We also have staff based at Velindre Cancer Centre who have responsibility for in-patients. In addition to this we have a nurse who is mainly based at our headquarters at Cardiff Gate and works as the charity’s Professional Development Manager.
Between them the Cancer Care Cymru nursing team has over 150 years’ experience of working with cancer patients and their families.
