Cancer Care Cymru Nurses fly the flag for Wales in Nursing Standards Awards 2008

What a great night for Wales and what a wonderful achievement for Cancer Care Cymru. The prestigious Nursing Standards annual Nurse of the Year awards ceremony held at The Royal Opera House, London on March 27th 2008 named not one but two Cancer Care Cymru nurses amongst the 24 finalists!

The awards which aim to recognize outstanding nursing practice throughout the UK are divided into several categories.  Gill Donovan our Director of Patient Services and lead Breast Specialist Oncology nurse was nominated for the Patient’s Choice award and Michele Pengelly Cancer Care Cymru Specialist Nurse- Supportive Care had been nominated (by Val Aston) for her excellent ‘Protected Meal Times’ initiative in the ‘Combating Malnutrition’ category.

Debbie Whiteley Cancer Care Cymru’s Commercial Director and Val Aston the charities Professional Development Manager were both delighted to attend the very enjoyable evening on behalf of Cancer Care Cymru. They were both thrilled when Gill was announced joint winner in the Patient Choice section and Michele runner up in the ‘Combating Malnutrition’ category.

One of Gills grateful patients Eleri Williams and Debbie Whiteley accepted Gills award from former health minister and trustee of the Patients Association Edwina Currie.

Michele also received her award and much praise from the former health minister for her hard work and commitment to improving patient care. 

Velindre NHS Trusts Chief Executive Paul Millar was amongst the many invited guests from all over the country.

Bringing together researchers, clinicians, nurses, policy makers and patients this conference aims to promote the excellent research being conducted in Wales and to highlight issues relating to policy-making, resources and services for people affected by cancer in the principality.

This event is jointly organised by the Wales Cancer Institute and the Wales Cancer Alliance.
The Wales Cancer Institute is a central partnership of collaborative research groups to increase the quantity and quality of cancer research in Wales, translating work done in the laboratories and clinical trials into new cancer drugs and new treatments

The Wales Cancer Alliance is made up of leading voluntary cancer organisations who wish to promote the best cancer prevention, treatment, research and care for people in Wales.
